Jeremiah 23:35

Posted on 18 May at 15:01

“Thus shall ye say every one to his neighbour, and every one to his brother, What hath the LORD answered? and, What hath the LORD spoken?”

Historical Context:During the time of Jeremiah, the people of Judah had turned away from God and were engaging in idolatry and other wicked practices. The religious leaders, including the prophets, were not faithfully proclaiming God’s message but instead were leading the people astray.

False Prophecies:In the preceding verses (Jeremiah 23:32-34), God expresses His displeasure with the false prophets. They were prophesying dreams and claiming them as God’s word, but they were actually misleading the people. God warns that He will judge those who twist His words and claim to speak for Him when they have not received any divine revelation.

Seeking the Truth:In verse 35, God instructs the people to ask one another what the Lord has answered and spoken. This is a call for the people to discern the true message of God and to question the false prophets. Rather than blindly accepting the words of these deceivers, the people should seek the truth and verify the authenticity of the messages being presented.

Importance of God’s Word:Through this verse, God emphasizes the significance of His words. He wants His people to recognize the importance of seeking His true message and discerning it from the falsehoods spread by the false prophets. It encourages an active engagement with the truth and a discerning attitude towards spiritual matters.

While this verse has a specific historical context, its principles can be applied today. In a world filled with various teachings and ideologies, it is crucial for believers to discern truth from falsehood. We should study and meditate on God’s Word, seeking His guidance and relying on the Holy Spirit to help us discern truth from deception.

Additionally, this verse highlights the importance of community and accountability. We should engage in conversations with fellow believers, discussing what we believe God has spoken and seeking clarity together. By discussing and sharing insights, we can help one another grow in our understanding of God’s Word.
