Jeremiah 25:7

Listen to this article

“Yet ye have not hearkened unto me, saith the LORD; that ye might provoke me to anger with the works of your hands, to your own hurt.”

Jeremiah 25:7 (KJV):

“Yet ye have not hearkened unto me, saith the LORD; that ye might provoke me to anger with the works of your hands, to your own hurt.”

Historical Context:Jeremiah was a prophet who lived during the time of the downfall of the southern kingdom of Judah. The people of Judah had turned away from God and engaged in idolatry and various forms of wickedness. Despite Jeremiah’s warnings and prophecies of impending judgement, the people refused to listen and persisted in their disobedience.

  • The Unheeded Message:

In this verse, the Lord declares that the people of Judah had not listened to Him. Despite His attempts to reach out to them through prophets like Jeremiah, they had ignored His messages and warnings. By refusing to heed the Lord’s instructions and correction, they had provoked Him to anger. Their disobedient actions, which included idolatry and the worship of false gods, led to their own downfall and brought harm upon themselves.

Consequences of Ignoring God’s Word:The verse highlights the consequences of disregarding God’s Word. When people persistently reject God’s instructions and refuse to follow His ways, they invite His anger and judgement. God, in His mercy, sends prophets and messengers to guide and correct His people, but when they ignore these warnings, they set themselves on a path of destruction and harm.

Lessons for Today:

  • God’s Desire for Obedience:

Jeremiah’s message is not limited to the historical context of ancient Judah. It also holds relevance for us today. Just as the people of Judah faced the consequences of their disobedience, we too must recognise the importance of heeding God’s Word and following His commands. When we disregard His instructions, we risk provoking His anger and experiencing negative consequences in our lives.

Through this verse, we see God’s desire for obedience from His people. He wants us to listen to His voice, heed His instructions, and follow His ways. Obedience to God’s Word brings blessings, protection, and a deeper relationship with Him.

God’s Mercy and Warnings:Despite the people’s disobedience, it’s important to note that God reached out to them through His prophets, such as Jeremiah. His warnings and prophecies were acts of mercy, intended to steer them back to a path of righteousness and away from destruction. In His grace, God provides opportunities for repentance and turning back to Him.
