Jeremiah 25:23
Dedan, and Tema, and Buz, and all that are in the vtmost corners: Jeremiah 25:23 (KJV)
Jeremiah 25:23 is part of a larger prophecy delivered by the prophet Jeremiah concerning God’s judgment upon the nations. In this particular verse Jeremiah mentions three regions—Dedan, Tema, and Buz—each inhabited by various peoples and tribes during biblical times.
Dedan was an ancient region located in the Arabian Peninsula. Biblical genealogies trace Dedan to Midian, a son of Abraham (see Genesis 25:3), and the name also appears in Genesis 10:7 and Ezekiel 25:13. Tema was likewise an area in the Arabian Peninsula associated with the descendants of Ishmael, the son of Abraham and Hagar. The people of Tema were known for their trading activities, and Job mentions the caravans of Tema in Job 6:19. Buz is believed to be another Arabian tribe, possibly descended from Nahor, the brother of Abraham. Buz is mentioned in Jeremiah 25:23 and also in Job 32:2, where Elihu is called the son of Barachel the Buzite.
In the context of Jeremiah 25, these regions are listed as part of a broader judgment against the nations. God appointed Babylon as an instrument of His judgment upon Judah and the surrounding nations because of their disobedience and idolatry. The preceding verses enumerate several other nations that would be affected, showing that God’s justice extends beyond the borders of Judah.
Jeremiah’s prophecy of judgment against Dedan, Tema, Buz, and “all that are in the utmost corners” demonstrates that God is sovereign over all nations and holds them accountable for their actions. The inclusion of these specific regions highlights that divine judgment is comprehensive and reaches the farthest corners of the earth.
Overall, Jeremiah 25:23 reminds us that God’s judgment is universal; no nation or region is exempt from His scrutiny. It underscores the importance of obedience and faithfulness to God’s commands, for He is the ultimate authority over all creation.
