Jeremiah 25:23

Dedan, and Tema, and Buz, and all that are in the utmost corners,

Jeremiah 25:23 (KJV)

Jeremiah 25:23 belongs to a larger prophecy of judgment against the nations. The prophet Jeremiah declares that God will bring judgment upon Judah and the surrounding peoples because of their disobedience and idolatry. In this verse, three Arabian regions—Dedan, Tema, and Buz—are named, along with a phrase describing those in remote places.

Dedan was an ancient region in the Arabian Peninsula. Biblical genealogies trace Dedan to Abraham through his son Jokshan (Genesis 25:3). Tema was likewise an area in Arabia associated with the descendants of Ishmael, the son of Abraham and Hagar (Genesis 25:13). The people of Tema were known for their trading activities, and Job mentions the caravans of Tema in Job 6:19. Buz is believed to be another Arabian tribe, possibly descended from Nahor, the brother of Abraham. Buz is mentioned in Job 32:2, where Elihu is called the son of Barachel the Buzite.

The final phrase, “all that are in the utmost corners,” has two main interpretations. The KJV renders it as a geographical description of those in distant places. However, many other translations render the Hebrew phrase as “all who cut the corners of their hair” or “all who clip the hair on their temples.” This refers to a specific pagan practice of cutting or trimming the hair at the temples or corners of the beard, a custom associated with the desert peoples of Arabia. This practice is mentioned in Jeremiah 9:26, where it is listed among nations that are “uncircumcised in heart.” The phrase identifies these peoples not just by location but by a distinctive cultural and religious practice, marking them as outside the covenant community and subject to judgment.

The inclusion of these specific Arabian tribes, known for their trade and isolation, emphasizes that no one is beyond the reach of God’s justice. The judgment is comprehensive, extending to all nations and peoples, regardless of their location or apparent security.

Jeremiah’s prophecy against Dedan, Tema, Buz, and “all that are in the utmost corners” demonstrates that God is sovereign over all nations and holds them accountable for their actions. The inclusion of these specific regions highlights that divine judgment is comprehensive and reaches the farthest corners of the earth.

Jeremiah 25:23 reminds us that God’s judgment is universal; no nation or region is exempt from His scrutiny. It underscores the importance of obedience and faithfulness to God’s commands, for He is the ultimate authority over all creation.
