Jeremiah 28:11

Listen to this article

And Hananiah spake in the presence of all the people, saying; Thus saith the Lord, Euen so will I breake the yoke of Nebuchadnezzer king of Babylon from the necke of all nations within the space of two full yeeres: and the Prophet Ieremiah went his way. Jeremiah 28:11 (KJV)

In this verse we encounter Hananiah, a false prophet, addressing the people of Judah. He delivers a bold proclamation that the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, will be broken and that the vessels taken from the house of the LORD and the exiles will be restored within two years. The context places his speech during the reign of King Zedekiah, and some accounts also associate it with the time of King Jehoiakim. Hananiah’s message directly contradicts the true prophetic warning given through Jeremiah, who had foretold a seventy‑year Babylonian domination (Jeremiah 25:11‑12).

The presence of false prophets – Hananiah was one among several who offered comforting but deceptive assurances. His claim that the yoke was already broken and that the temple vessels and Jeconiah, son of Jehoiakim, would return quickly illustrates how false prophets can mislead a nation yearning for relief.

Consequences of false prophecy – While Hananiah’s words gave temporary hope, they ultimately led the people away from God’s revealed plan. The danger lies in making decisions based on promises that contradict Scripture, which can result in spiritual and practical ruin.

God’s sovereignty – Jeremiah’s steadfast message underscores that God’s timing and purposes are immutable. The promise of a swift deliverance was not from the LORD; instead, God’s faithful declaration of a seventy‑year exile remained true. This reminds believers that human speculation cannot alter divine providence.

Heeding true prophets – Jeremiah’s response—simply “going his way”—demonstrates his commitment to delivering God’s word despite popular opposition. Believers are called to listen to those who speak in accordance with Scripture, aligning themselves with God’s will rather than the alluring but false assurances of impostors.

Discerning truth from deception – The episode calls every Christian to diligent study of God’s Word and reliance on the Holy Spirit for discernment. Jesus warned that false prophets would arise (Matthew 24:11); therefore, grounding oneself in Scripture is essential to recognize and reject deceptive teachings.

In conclusion, Jeremiah 28:11 presents a stark contrast between a false prophet’s optimistic lie and the sober truth of God’s sovereign plan. The passage urges vigilance, discernment, and trust in God’s faithful promises, encouraging believers to remain rooted in Scripture and to reject the allure of unfounded hope.
