Jeremiah 28:12

Listen to this article

“Then the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah the prophet, after that Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke from off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah, saying,”

Context:Jeremiah 28 records an encounter between two prophets, Jeremiah and Hananiah. Hananiah was a false prophet who spoke a message of peace and prosperity to the people of Judah, contrary to the message of judgment and exile that Jeremiah had been proclaiming. In response, Jeremiah had confronted Hananiah, warning him that his words were not from God.

God’s Word to Jeremiah:The verse begins by stating, “Then the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah the prophet.” Throughout the book of Jeremiah, the phrase “the word of the LORD” signifies God’s direct communication to the prophet. It indicates that God had a specific message to convey to Jeremiah concerning the events that had just taken place.

Hananiah’s Actions:The verse further describes that Hananiah had broken the yoke from off Jeremiah’s neck. Earlier in Jeremiah 27, the Lord had instructed Jeremiah to wear a yoke as a symbol of the coming Babylonian captivity. Hananiah’s act of breaking the yoke was a symbolic gesture intended to challenge Jeremiah’s prophecy and claim that God would break the yoke of Babylon’s rule over Judah within two years.

God’s Response:After Hananiah broke the yoke, God responded by sending a message to Jeremiah. This response highlights the authority and sovereignty of God over false prophets and their deceptive messages. While Hananiah had attempted to present his act as a sign of deliverance, God’s message to Jeremiah would reveal the truth.

The Importance of Discernment:This passage underscores the importance of discernment when it comes to prophetic messages. It warns against blindly accepting every claim of a prophet without testing it against the truth of God’s Word. Jeremiah’s interaction with Hananiah serves as a reminder to seek God’s guidance and carefully evaluate the messages we receive, ensuring they align with God’s revealed truth.

Overall, Jeremiah 28:12 highlights the clash between the true prophet Jeremiah and the false prophet Hananiah. It emphasises the need for discernment and the reliability of God’s Word as the ultimate source of truth.
