Jeremiah 31:33

Listen to this article

“But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.”

Context:To better understand Jeremiah 31:33, let’s consider its context. The book of Jeremiah is a prophetic book written by the prophet Jeremiah during a time of great turmoil for the nation of Israel. God had pronounced judgment upon Israel due to their disobedience and idolatry, and they were facing exile. However, in the midst of this judgment, God also promises restoration and a new covenant.

The Promise of a New Covenant:In Jeremiah 31:31-34, God promises to establish a new covenant with the house of Israel. This new covenant would be different from the old covenant given through Moses, which the people had broken. God declares that He will make this new covenant with His people after the days of judgment and exile. This new covenant would bring about a deep and personal transformation within the hearts of His people.

God’s Law in the Inward Parts:In Jeremiah 31:33, God reveals one of the key aspects of the new covenant. He says, “I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts.” This speaks of a profound internal change that would take place within His people. Instead of merely external adherence to the law, God would write His law upon their hearts, enabling them to truly live in obedience to Him.

Relationship with God:The promise of the new covenant also includes an intimate relationship between God and His people. God declares, “I will be their God, and they shall be my people.” This covenant would establish a deep and personal connection between God and His chosen ones. It signifies a restoration of the broken relationship caused by sin and rebellion.

Fulfillment in Christ:The New Testament reveals that the promise of the new covenant in Jeremiah 31:33 finds its fulfilment in Jesus Christ. Through His sacrificial death and resurrection, Jesus inaugurated the new covenant. Through faith in Christ, believers are indwelled by the Holy Spirit, who writes God’s law upon their hearts (2 Corinthians 3:3, Hebrews 10:16). This enables believers to have a personal and transformative relationship with God.

Application:As believers in Christ, we can find great encouragement and assurance in Jeremiah 31:33. Through the new covenant, God has transformed our hearts and empowered us to live in obedience to Him. The indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit enables us to experience a deep relationship with God, where He guides us, teaches us, and empowers us to live according to His will.

  • In summary:Jeremiah 31:33 reveals the promise of the new covenant, where God would write His law upon the hearts of His people. This new covenant establishes an intimate relationship between God and His people, and it finds its fulfilment in Jesus Christ. As believers, we have the privilege of experiencing this transformative relationship with God through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
