Jeremiah 31:38

Listen to this article

“Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that the city shall be built to the LORD from the tower of Hananeel unto the gate of the corner.”

Context:Jeremiah 31:38 is part of a larger passage known as the “New Covenant” prophecy in Jeremiah 31:31-40. In this prophecy, God promises to establish a new covenant with His people, different from the covenant made with their ancestors, which they broke. This new covenant would bring forgiveness of sins and a restoration of their relationship with God.

Literal meaning:In verse 38, the Lord declares that a time will come when the city will be rebuilt for the Lord. The reference to “the tower of Hananeel unto the gate of the corner” indicates the specific boundaries of the rebuilt city.

Symbolic meaning:The physical rebuilding of the city holds symbolic significance. It represents the restoration and renewal of God’s people. The brokenness and destruction caused by sin and disobedience will be replaced with a renewed relationship with God. It points to a time of spiritual and physical restoration when God’s people will dwell in peace and obedience under His rule.

Fulfillment in Christ:The ultimate fulfilment of Jeremiah 31:38 is found in Jesus Christ. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus established the new covenant promised by God. He became the Mediator of this covenant, offering forgiveness of sins and reconciling humanity to God. The city rebuilt for the Lord can be seen as the Church, composed of believers from all nations who have entered into this new covenant through faith in Christ.

Application:Jeremiah 31:38 reminds us of God’s faithfulness to His promises. Just as He fulfilled His promise of a new covenant through Jesus, we can trust that He will fulfil all His promises in our lives. It also encourages us to seek spiritual renewal and restoration in our relationship with God. As members of the Church, we are called to live in obedience to God’s Word and be agents of His kingdom, proclaiming His love and forgiveness to the world.

  • In conclusion:Jeremiah 31:38 speaks of a time when the city will be rebuilt to the Lord, symbolising the restoration and renewal of God’s people. Ultimately, it finds fulfilment in Jesus Christ and His establishment of the new covenant. As believers, we can find encouragement in God’s faithfulness and strive to live in obedience, trusting in His promises.
