Jeremiah 31:38

Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that the city shall be built to the Lord from the tower of Hananeel unto the gate of the corner.

Jeremiah 31:38 (KJV)

Jeremiah 31:38 belongs to the New Covenant prophecy in Jeremiah 31:31-40. In this passage, God promises a covenant unlike the one made with their ancestors, which they broke. This new covenant brings forgiveness of sins and restores the people’s relationship with God.

The Lord declares that a time will come when the city will be rebuilt for Him. The phrase “Behold, the days come” is a prophetic formula that signals the certainty of future fulfillment. The boundaries named—the tower of Hananeel and the gate of the corner—mark the extent of the rebuilt city, showing that the promise is concrete and specific.

The rebuilding is “to the Lord,” indicating that the city is restored for His honor and purposes, not merely for the people’s comfort. This physical restoration carries symbolic weight: it represents the renewal of God’s people after the brokenness caused by sin and disobedience, pointing to a time when they will dwell in peace and obedience under His rule. The specific mention of these landmarks also assures readers that God’s promise of restoration is not vague but anchored in real places His people knew.

The ultimate fulfillment of Jeremiah 31:38 is found in Jesus Christ. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus established the new covenant God promised. He became the Mediator of this covenant, offering forgiveness of sins and reconciling humanity to God. The city rebuilt for the Lord can be seen as the Church, composed of believers from all nations who have entered this new covenant through faith in Christ.

Jeremiah 31:38 reminds us of God’s faithfulness to His promises. Just as He fulfilled His promise of a new covenant through Jesus, we can trust that He will fulfill all His promises in our lives. It also encourages us to seek spiritual renewal and restoration in our relationship with God. As members of the Church, we are called to live in obedience to God’s Word and be agents of His kingdom, proclaiming His love and forgiveness to the world.
