even

unto this day, and in Israel, and among

other men; and hast made thee a name, as at this day; Jeremiah 32:20 (KJV)

Context: Jeremiah 32 describes Jeremiah’s imprisonment during the Babylonian siege of Jerusalem. Despite the dire circumstances, God instructs Jeremiah to buy a field as a sign of hope and restoration. Verse 20 begins a prayer of praise, acknowledging God’s mighty works.

Historical Background:

  • Egypt: Jeremiah refers to the signs and wonders God performed in Egypt, recalling the plagues that struck the land during Moses’ time and led to Israel’s liberation.
  • Israel: The wonders extend to Israel itself, recalling events such as the parting of the Red Sea, manna in the wilderness, and victories in battle.

Acknowledgment of God’s Signs and Wonders:

  • God’s Power: Jeremiah declares that God set signs and wonders both in Egypt and among the heathen, highlighting divine sovereignty and supernatural intervention in history.
  • Demonstrating His Presence: These signs serve as evidence of God’s active involvement, revealing His presence, authority, and purpose.

Making a Name:

  • Reputation and Fame: Jeremiah recognizes that God has made a name for Himself; through remarkable acts, God’s name and reputation have been established among Israel and the nations.
  • Enduring Impact: He affirms that God’s name remains known and revered in his day, and the past signs continue to resonate, reminding people of God’s faithfulness.

Application to Our Lives:

  • Trust in God’s Power: When facing difficulty, believers can draw encouragement from the historic signs and wonders, remembering that nothing is too hard for God and He can intervene miraculously.
  • Recognizing God’s Presence: Just as God’s wonders were evident in ancient times, believers can trust that He is still actively involved today, urging us to be attentive to His work in both extraordinary and ordinary moments.
  • Reflecting God’s Name: As followers of Christ, our lives should reflect God’s character and demonstrate His power, contributing to the ongoing proclamation of His name.
