Jeremiah 35:17

Listen to this article

“Therefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring upon Judah and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the evil that I have pronounced against them: because I have spoken unto them, but they have not heard; and I have called unto them, but they have not answered.”

Context:Jeremiah 35 records the account of the Rechabites, a group of people who followed the instructions of their ancestor Jonadab strictly. The Lord commanded Jeremiah to bring the Rechabites to the temple and offer them wine to drink. However, the Rechabites refused to drink wine or build houses, in obedience to the command of their forefather. In contrast, the people of Judah and Jerusalem had been disobedient to God’s commands.

Obedience and Faithfulness:The Rechabites serve as an example of obedience and faithfulness. They faithfully followed the commands given by their ancestor, even though they were not specifically commanded by God. Their obedience to human instructions stood in stark contrast to the disobedience of the people of Judah and Jerusalem to God’s direct commands. This highlights the importance of obedience and faithfulness in our relationship with God.

God’s Patience:God had been patient with the people of Judah and Jerusalem, sending them prophets like Jeremiah to call them to repentance. He had spoken to them, pleading with them to turn from their wicked ways, but they refused to listen. Despite God’s warnings and calls for repentance, they remained unresponsive. This verse reveals God’s long-suffering nature and His desire for people to turn back to Him.

Consequences of Disobedience:God, in His justice, declared that He would bring upon Judah and Jerusalem the judgment and evil He had pronounced against them. The people’s persistent disobedience and rejection of God’s Word would result in dire consequences. It serves as a reminder that disobedience to God’s commands has serious repercussions. God’s judgments are not arbitrary but are in response to persistent unfaithfulness.

God’s Sovereignty:The verse also emphasizes God’s sovereignty and authority as the LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel. He is the one who determines and executes judgment. His pronouncement of judgment is certain and will come to pass. God’s sovereignty over all nations and His ability to bring about His plans and purposes cannot be challenged.

Application:

  • Obedience:We are called to obey God’s commands and instructions, just as the Rechabites did. Our obedience should not be limited to the explicit commands found in Scripture but should extend to our response to God’s leading and the wise counsel of those who follow Him faithfully.
  • Listening to God’s Word:We should be attentive to God’s voice and responsive to His Word. The people of Judah and Jerusalem failed to hear and answer God’s calls, leading to their downfall. We need to cultivate a habit of listening to God through prayer, meditation on His Word, and seeking His guidance in our lives.
  • Repentance and Restoration:The judgment pronounced on Judah and Jerusalem highlights the importance of repentance. Even in the face of judgment, God desires for people to turn back to Him in genuine repentance. We should heed His warnings, acknowledge our sins, and seek forgiveness, knowing that God is gracious and willing to restore those who repent.

Jeremiah 35:17 serves as a reminder of the importance of obedience, the consequences of disobedience, and the patience of God in calling people to repentance. It encourages us to listen to God’s Word, respond in faithfulness, and seek His forgiveness when we fall short.
