“Because the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have performed the commandment of their father, which he commanded them; but this people hath not hearkened unto me”

Context and Background: Jeremiah 35 is a chapter in the book of Jeremiah that contains a message from God to the prophet Jeremiah. In this chapter, Jeremiah is instructed to bring the Rechabites, a group of people who were known for their obedience to their ancestor Jonadab’s commands, into the temple of the Lord. Jeremiah sets before them bowls of wine and invites them to drink, but they refuse, stating that their ancestor had commanded them not to drink wine. God then commends the Rechabites for their faithfulness to their father’s commandments.

The Rechabites and Their Obedience: The Rechabites were descendants of Jonadab, who had commanded his descendants not to drink wine, build houses, sow seed, or plant vineyards. Their obedience to these commands had been faithfully passed down through generations. In contrast, the people of Judah had repeatedly disobeyed God’s commands and turned to idolatry.

Lessons from the Rechabites:

  • Obedience and Faithfulness: The Rechabites serve as an example of obedience and faithfulness to the commandments given by their earthly father, Jonadab. Their commitment to their father’s instructions is commendable, and it highlights the importance of obeying God’s commandments. In our relationship with God, obedience is a vital aspect of our faithfulness.
  • Comparison to Israel’s Disobedience: Through the Rechabites’ obedience, God contrasts their faithfulness with the disobedience of the people of Judah. Despite God’s repeated calls for the people to repent and turn back to Him, they refused to listen. This verse reminds us of the consequences of disobedience and the importance of heeding God’s Word.
  • Faithful Living in a World of Compromise: The Rechabites lived in a time when compromise and disobedience were prevalent. They stood firm in their commitment to their father’s commands, even though the prevailing culture may have tempted them to compromise. Similarly, as Christians, we are called to live faithfully in a world that often compromises godly values. The Rechabites’ example encourages us to remain steadfast in our commitment to God’s Word, even when it goes against the prevailing norms.
  • God’s Response:

God commends the Rechabites for their obedience, stating that they have indeed performed the commandment of their father. Their faithfulness serves as a rebuke to the people of Judah who have disregarded God’s commandments. The Rechabites’ obedience stands as a contrast to the rebellion and unfaithfulness of God’s people.

Application:

  • Obedience to God: The Rechabites’ obedience to their earthly father’s commands serves as a reminder of the importance of obedience to God. As believers, we are called to heed God’s commandments and live according to His will. Our obedience reflects our love for God and our trust in His wisdom.
  • Faithfulness in a Faithless World: The Rechabites’ example challenges us to remain faithful to God’s Word and His calling, even when the world around us may encourage compromise or disobedience. Our faithfulness can inspire others and serve as a testimony to the truth and power of God.

The disobedience of the people of Judah led to severe consequences for them. This serves as a warning to us that disobedience to God’s commandments can have negative consequences in our lives as well. God desires our obedience because He knows what is best for us.

In conclusion, Jeremiah 35:16 highlights the contrast between the obedience of the Rechabites and the disobedience of the people of Judah. The faithfulness and obedience of the Rechabites serve as a rebuke and a challenge to God’s people to remain faithful to His commandments. It also reminds us of the importance of obedience and the consequences of disobedience.
