Listen to this article

“Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took Jeremiah the prophet unto him into the third entry that is in the house of the LORD: and the king said unto Jeremiah, I will ask thee a thing; hide nothing from me.”

Context:Jeremiah was a prophet during the reign of King Zedekiah in Judah. The nation was in a state of decline, and Jeremiah had been proclaiming God’s message of impending judgment and exile if the people did not repent and turn back to God. The leaders and false prophets opposed Jeremiah’s message and persecuted him.

The Setting:Zedekiah, the king, summons Jeremiah. In this verse, we find Zedekiah secretly seeking Jeremiah’s counsel. The king takes Jeremiah into the “third entry” of the house of the LORD, a place likely reserved for private discussions or consultations.

The King’s Request:Zedekiah expresses his intention to ask Jeremiah something and urges him to hide nothing in his response. This reveals the king’s recognition of Jeremiah’s prophetic authority and his desire for truthful guidance in a time of great crisis.

The Significance:This verse highlights the ongoing struggle between Jeremiah’s prophetic message and the political powers of his time. Despite the resistance and opposition Jeremiah faced, even from the highest authority, God’s word continued to prevail.

  • Seeking godly counsel:Zedekiah’s action of seeking out Jeremiah demonstrates the importance of seeking wise counsel in times of difficulty. As believers, we should seek godly advice when faced with challenging decisions or situations.
  • Honesty and transparency:Zedekiah urges Jeremiah to hide nothing from him. This shows the importance of honesty and transparency in our interactions, especially when seeking guidance or advice. Likewise, as followers of Christ, we should strive to be honest and transparent in all our dealings.
  • Respecting God’s messengers:Despite his struggles with Jeremiah’s message, Zedekiah recognizes the prophetic authority entrusted to him by God. This reminds us to respect and honor those whom God has appointed as messengers and leaders in our lives.
  • God’s word prevails:Jeremiah’s unwavering commitment to God’s truth, despite opposition, is an example of faithfulness. This verse reminds us that God’s word will ultimately prevail, regardless of the opposition we may face. We should stand firm in our faith, trusting in the sovereignty of God.

Overall, Jeremiah 38:14 portrays the ongoing tension between the message of God’s prophet and the political powers of the time. It teaches us the importance of seeking godly counsel, practicing honesty, respecting God’s messengers, and ultimately relying on God’s word, which will endure and prevail.
