Jeremiah 39:16

“Go and speak to Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, saying, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring my words upon this city for evil, and not for good; and they shall be accomplished in that day before thee.”

Jeremiah 39:16 is part of the account of the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians and the subsequent captivity of the Israelites.

In this verse, God instructs Jeremiah to deliver a message to Ebed-melech, an Ethiopian eunuch who had shown kindness to Jeremiah during his imprisonment.

In this message, the Lord affirms His authority as the God of Israel and declares that the judgment He had pronounced on the city of Jerusalem would come to pass.

The phrase I will bring my words upon this city for evil, and not for good indicates that the judgment that was about to befall Jerusalem would be a severe and devastating one.

This judgment was a consequence of the people’s persistent disobedience and rebellion against God.

The phrase and they shall be accomplished in that day before thee indicates that Ebed-melech would witness the fulfillment of God’s words.

This serves as a confirmation of the authenticity and reliability of God’s prophetic message delivered through Jeremiah.

The account of the fall of Jerusalem and the exile of the Israelites serves as a reminder of the consequences of disobedience and the importance of heeding God’s warnings.

Despite the judgment pronounced upon Jerusalem, God’s grace is evident in the fact that He provides a warning through His prophet Jeremiah and extends mercy to Ebed-melech for his kindness.

Overall, Jeremiah 39:16 highlights the righteous judgment of God and His faithfulness in fulfilling His word. It also emphasizes the importance of obedience and the consequences of rebellion against God’s commands.
