Jeremiah 39:16

Go and speak to Ebed–melech the Ethiopian, saying, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring my words upon this city for evil, and not for good; and they shall be accomplished in that day before thee.

Jeremiah 39:16 (KJV)

Jeremiah 39:16 belongs to the account of Jerusalem’s fall to the Babylonians and the captivity of the Israelites. God commands Jeremiah to deliver a personal message to Ebed-melech, an Ethiopian eunuch who had rescued the prophet from a cistern where enemies had thrown him.

The Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, declares that He will bring His words upon the city for evil, and not for good. This means the judgment He had pronounced through Jeremiah would surely come to pass, and it would be severe. The phrase “and they shall be accomplished in that day before thee” assures Ebed-melech that he would personally witness the fulfillment of God’s prophetic word, confirming its authenticity and reliability. The message underscores God’s sovereignty over nations and individuals, and His word is certain to be fulfilled.

This judgment was the consequence of persistent disobedience and rebellion against God. Yet the same God who judges also shows mercy; He sends a specific word of assurance to Ebed-melech for his kindness, and the following verses record his deliverance. This demonstrates that God’s word is certain, whether for judgment or for salvation.

The fall of Jerusalem reminds us that disobedience brings consequences and that God’s warnings are not empty. At the same time, God’s personal care for Ebed-melech encourages believers to trust in the certainty of His word and to find assurance in His faithfulness, even when circumstances seem dark. God sees the kindness shown to His servants and responds with grace.

God’s righteous judgment and His faithfulness in fulfilling His word stand together. He sees the kindness shown to His servants and responds with grace, inviting us to obey Him and to rest in the reliability of His promises.
