Jeremiah 46:12
The nations haue heard of thy shame, and thy crie hath filled the land: for the mightie man hath stumbled against the mightie, and they are fallen both together. Jeremiah 46:12 (KJV)
Historical Context: At the time of this prophecy, Egypt was a powerful nation with a rich history and a strong military. However, the Egyptians had placed their trust in their own strength and in alliances with other nations instead of relying on God. Jeremiah’s message therefore serves as a warning and a call to repentance for Egypt.
The Prophecy: The prophet declares that the nations have heard of Egypt’s shame. The news of Egypt’s impending defeat and humiliation has spread far and wide, causing distress and fear. The cry of the Egyptians has filled the land as they confront the consequences of their actions.
The phrase “the mighty man hath stumbled against the mighty” refers to the powerful warriors and soldiers of Egypt. Despite their strength and skill, they will stumble and fall in battle. The verse emphasizes that even the mighty and seemingly invincible will be brought low.
The expression “they are fallen both together” conveys that the defeat will be total. One perspective explains that Egyptian warriors will fall in battle against the Babylonian forces, indicating the complete defeat of Egypt. Another perspective suggests that both the attacking forces and the defenders will experience defeat, portraying a scene of chaos and destruction where both sides suffer losses.
Together, these observations underscore the certainty of divine judgment against reliance on human power alone. The passage warns that pride and self‑reliance invite downfall, and it calls the people of Egypt to turn back to God before the foretold disaster becomes reality.
