Jeremiah 47:2

Posted on 18 May at 13:59

Thus saith the Lord, Behold, waters rise vp out of the North, and shall be an ouerflowing flood, and shall ouerflow the land, and all that is therein, the citie, and them that dwell therein: then the men shall crie, and all the inhabitants of the land shall howle. Jeremiah 47:2 (KJV)

Context and Background:

Jeremiah 47:2 is part of a prophecy pronounced by the prophet Jeremiah concerning the judgment of the Philistines. The Philistines were a neighboring people of Israel who inhabited the coastal region of Canaan. This prophecy addresses the Philistines as a whole, with Gaza being one of the prominent Philistine cities mentioned later in the chapter.

The Sovereign Word of the Lord:

The verse begins with the declaration, “Thus saith the Lord.” This phrase emphasizes that the message being conveyed is not the prophet’s own words but rather the direct word of God. It signifies the authority and reliability of the message. As believers, we recognize that the words of the Lord are trustworthy and should be heeded.

Divine Judgment:

The verse describes a forthcoming judgment upon the Philistines, symbolized by waters rising up out of the north. The overflowing flood represents a destructive force that will overflow the land, affecting everything in its path. This imagery signifies the overwhelming and devastating nature of the judgment that God will bring upon the Philistines.

Universal Impact:

The judgment will not be limited to a specific city alone but will extend to the entire land and all its inhabitants. The phrase “all that is therein” indicates the comprehensive nature of the judgment. No one will be exempted or spared from the consequences of God’s judgment.

The Response of the People:

The verse concludes by stating that the men will cry out and the inhabitants of the land will howl. This response suggests a collective outcry of anguish and despair from the people as they experience the devastating effects of the judgment. It indicates the severity of the judgment and the distress it will cause among the Philistines.

Application:

The certainty of God’s judgment: Just as God’s judgment was certain upon the Philistines, we are reminded that God is a righteous judge who will hold all people accountable for their actions. It serves as a call to repentance and living in accordance with God’s will.

The authority of God’s word: The phrase “Thus saith the Lord” emphasizes the authority and reliability of God’s word. As believers, we are called to pay attention to and submit ourselves to the teachings and instructions found in the Bible.

The consequences of sin: The overflowing flood symbolizes the consequences of sin and disobedience. It reminds us that our actions have repercussions, and it is important to align our lives with God’s commandments to avoid the destructive consequences of sin.

The need for repentance: The response of the people, crying out and howling, indicates the despair and anguish that comes as a result of God’s judgment. It serves as a reminder of the importance of repentance and turning back to God, seeking His forgiveness and grace.

In summary, Jeremiah 47:2 presents a prophecy of judgment upon the Philistines, emphasizing the certainty and severity of God’s judgment. It reminds us of the authority of God’s word, the consequences of sin, and the need for repentance in our lives.
