Jeremiah 48:21

Posted on 18 May at 13:59

And iudgement is come vpon the plaine countrey, vpon Holon, and vpon Iahazah, and vpon Mephaath, Jeremiah 48:21 (KJV)

In this verse the prophet Jeremiah delivers a stark message of judgment upon several cities and regions. To understand its weight it helps to view it within the broader context of Jeremiah 48, the chapter that pronounces judgment against Moab, a neighboring nation of ancient Israel. Jeremiah 48 contains a series of prophecies directed toward Moab, revealing God’s plan to punish the nation because of its pride, idolatry, and mistreatment of Israel.

The verse specifically names three locations—Holon, Jahaz, and Mephaath. These places represent the plain or open country of Moab, illustrating that the judgment extends over the entire lowland region. The purpose of this judgment is to bring correction and discipline to the Moabites. It is important to recognize that biblical judgments are not intended solely as punitive measures; they also serve as a call to repentance and an opportunity for redemption.

From this passage we can draw several key lessons. First, God’s judgment is active and universal: the declaration that judgment has come upon the plain country shows that God is involved in the affairs of nations and holds them accountable for their actions, underscoring His sovereignty as the ultimate judge of the earth. Second, the prophecy highlights the consequences of sin. The downfall of Moab demonstrates that sinful pride and idolatry bring inevitable repercussions, reminding us that our own deeds have real consequences and that God, in His righteousness, will hold us accountable. Third, even amid judgment there is an invitation to repentance. God’s discipline aims to change hearts and draw people back to Him; His desire is not destruction but restoration and reconciliation.

Overall, Jeremiah 48:21 forms part of a larger message of judgment against Moab, emphasizing God’s sovereignty, the inevitable consequences of sin, and the gracious opportunity for repentance. It calls each of us to examine our lives, acknowledge our actions, and turn to God in sincere repentance, seeking His mercy and forgiveness. May this reminder sharpen our reverence for God’s holy standards and motivate us to live in obedience.
