Jeremiah 48:17

Posted on 18 May at 13:59

All yee that are about him bemoane him, and all yee that know his Name, say, How is the strong staffe broken, and the beautifull rod! Jeremiah 48:17 (KJV)

Thus saith the LORD, O inhabitant of Aroer, stand by the way, and enquire of those that flee, and of them that escape, and say, ‘What shall be done?’

Context: To better understand this verse, it is essential to consider the broader context of the book of Jeremiah. Jeremiah was a prophet who delivered God’s messages to the people of Judah during a time of great turmoil and impending judgment. In Jeremiah 48, the focus is on the judgment pronounced against Moab, a neighbouring nation of Judah. Aroer was a city located in the territory of Moab. In this verse, Jeremiah addresses the inhabitants of Aroer, urging them to take notice of what is happening around them. The instruction to “stand by the way” implies being watchful and observant. The people of Aroer are called to pay attention to the events unfolding and to engage with those who are fleeing. The people of Aroer are instructed to inquire from those who are escaping or seeking refuge about what has happened. By doing so, they can gather firsthand information about the events and gain a clearer understanding of the situation. The question, “What shall be done?” suggests a desire to know the cause and nature of the calamity. It indicates an urgency to gather information about the situation and to understand the reasons behind the distress and the resulting flight of people. While this verse specifically addresses the inhabitants of Aroer during a time of crisis, there are broader lessons we can draw. It reminds us of the importance of being attentive to our surroundings and engaging with others in times of distress. It encourages us to seek understanding, not just to satisfy our curiosity, but also to respond appropriately and compassionately to the needs of those affected by difficult circumstances.
