Jeremiah 48:16

The calamity of Moab is near to come, and his affliction hasteth fast.

Jeremiah 48:16 (KJV)

Jeremiah prophesied in the sixth century BCE, ministering to the southern kingdom of Judah just before its fall to Babylon. In Jeremiah 48, he delivers a message of judgment against Moab, a neighboring nation east of Israel descended from Lot. The verse declares that Moab’s calamity is near and its affliction is coming quickly, emphasizing the certainty and swiftness of divine judgment.

The Hebrew word for calamity (ra’ah) conveys disaster or ruin, and the verse stresses that this ruin is imminent. Moab’s judgment was not random; it came because of the nation’s pride, arrogance, idolatry, and contempt for God and His people. The prophecy was fulfilled historically when Babylon invaded Moab, as commentators note. The urgency of the language calls for a response, underscoring that God’s judgment is certain and not delayed.

This verse is part of a series of oracles against nations, demonstrating that God holds all nations accountable. The broader chapter includes a promise of restoration for Moab in the latter days (Jeremiah 48:47), showing God’s mercy even in judgment. This connection reminds readers that divine judgment is not the final word; God’s justice and mercy work together.

Moab’s downfall illustrates that individuals and nations are accountable for their actions before God. Their disobedience and idolatry led to destruction, emphasizing the importance of living according to God’s will. In times of distress, believers are urged to trust in God alone, not in worldly power or false gods. Moab’s destruction warns against relying on human strength and reminds us that God sees all and will hold every person and nation accountable in due time.

Moab had the opportunity to turn from sin but persisted in rebellion. This passage emphasizes the importance of repentance and seeking God’s forgiveness, for He is merciful and willing to restore those who humbly turn to Him. The swiftness of Moab’s judgment also calls believers to heed God’s warnings promptly and live in humility before Him, recognizing that His justice will ultimately prevail.

Jeremiah 48:16 conveys God’s judgment upon Moab, yet it also reveals His character. God is sovereign over nations, and His justice is certain. At the same time, His mercy is present, as seen in the promise of restoration. This verse invites readers to examine their own lives, to turn from pride and rebellion, and to trust in God’s righteous rule, knowing that He is both just and merciful.
