Jeremiah 50:34
Their Redeemer is strong; the Lord of hosts is his name: he shall throughly plead their cause, that he may give rest to the land, and disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon.
Jeremiah 50:34 (KJV)
Context
Jeremiah 50 contains prophecies concerning the judgment and downfall of Babylon. Babylon was a dominant world power that had subjugated many nations, including Israel, and God pronounced judgment on Babylon for its pride, idolatry, and mistreatment of His people. In this verse, God assures His people that He will be their Redeemer and will plead their cause.
Meaning
The verse begins by emphasizing the strength of their Redeemer. The Hebrew word for Redeemer is go’el, denoting a kinsman-redeemer who delivers and avenges his family members. This highlights God’s commitment to redeem and rescue His people from oppression. As the Redeemer, God takes on the role of a protector and advocate, defending and fighting on behalf of His people.
The phrase “the LORD of hosts” emphasizes God’s sovereignty and authority over all creation. It signifies His power and control over the heavenly armies, indicating that no force or power can stand against Him. Because He is Jehovah, the everlasting and unchangeable I AM, He is strong and mighty, able to redeem His Israel. God’s authority over the heavenly hosts assures His people that He has the ability to fulfill His promises and execute His judgments.
The verse states that God will plead the cause of His people. This implies that God will act as their advocate in the face of their enemies. He will defend and fight on behalf of His people, ensuring that justice is served. This promise gives hope to the Israelites, assuring them that God will not abandon them in their time of need.
The verse concludes with the outcome of God pleading the cause of His people. God’s intervention will result in rest for the land of His people, providing them with peace and security. On the other hand, Babylon, representing the oppressors and enemies of God’s people, will be made desolate. This dual outcome—rest for His people and unrest for their oppressors—demonstrates God’s justice and faithfulness.
Application
Jeremiah 50:34 reminds God’s people of His strength, sovereignty, and faithfulness. It assures them that He will advocate for them, bring justice, grant them rest, and ultimately overthrow their oppressors. This verse encourages trust in God’s power and reassures believers that He will fight on their behalf in times of trouble.
