Their Redeemer

is strong; the LORD of hosts

is

his name: he shall throughly plead their cause, that he may give rest to the land, and disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon. Jeremiah 50:34 (KJV)

Historical Context: Jeremiah 50 contains prophecies concerning the judgment and downfall of Babylon. In this particular verse, God assures His people that He will be their Redeemer and will plead their cause.

The Redeemer: The verse begins by emphasizing the strength of their Redeemer. The Redeemer refers to God, who is powerful and mighty. This highlights God’s ability to save His people and deliver them from their enemies. As the Redeemer, God takes on the role of a kinsman‑redeemer, protecting and advocating for His people.

The LORD of Hosts: The phrase “the LORD of hosts” emphasizes God’s sovereignty and authority over all creation. It signifies His power and control over the heavenly armies, indicating that no force or power can stand against Him. God’s authority over the heavenly hosts assures His people that He has the ability to fulfill His promises and execute His judgments.

Pleading Their Cause: The verse states that God will plead the cause of His people. This implies that God will act as their advocate in the face of their enemies. He will defend and fight on behalf of His people, ensuring that justice is served. This promise gives hope to the Israelites, assuring them that God will not abandon them in their time of need.

Giving Rest and Desolating Babylon: The verse concludes with the outcome of God pleading the cause of His people. God’s intervention will result in rest for the land of His people, providing them with peace and security. On the other hand, Babylon, representing the oppressors and enemies of God’s people, will be made desolate. This indicates that God will disrupt and overthrow the oppressive power of Babylon, causing ruin within their kingdom.

Overall, Jeremiah 50:34 reminds God’s people of His strength, sovereignty, and faithfulness. It assures them that He will advocate for them, bring justice, grant them rest, and ultimately overthrow their oppressors. This verse encourages trust in God’s power and reassures believers that He will fight on their behalf in times of trouble.
