Context:Jeremiah 51 is a prophetic chapter that contains a message of judgment against Babylon. The entire chapter consists of a prophecy foretelling the fall of Babylon and the reasons behind its destruction.
Babylon’s Unhealable Condition:In Jeremiah 51:9, the prophet speaks on behalf of the people who would have wanted to heal Babylon. However, the verse states that Babylon cannot be healed. This suggests that Babylon’s sinful and idolatrous nature has reached a point of no return, and the judgment of God is inevitable.
Forsaking Babylon:The verse continues by urging the people to forsake Babylon and return to their own countries. It is a reminder that they should not be entangled in the sins of the city and its impending judgment.
Severity of Babylon’s Judgment:The latter part of the verse emphasizes the magnitude of Babylon’s judgment. It states that her judgment reaches unto heaven and is lifted up to the skies. This signifies the severity and completeness of God’s judgment upon Babylon. It indicates that Babylon’s punishment will be severe and extensive, reaching to the highest levels.
