Ezekiel 3:22

Listen to this article

“And the hand of the LORD was there upon me; and he said unto me, Arise, go forth into the plain, and I will there talk with thee.”

Context:This verse is part of a larger passage where the prophet Ezekiel is being called by God to be a watchman and messenger to the people of Israel during their exile in Babylon. In this particular verse, Ezekiel describes an encounter with the hand of the Lord upon him, and God commands him to go forth into the plain to receive further instructions.

Here are some key points to consider in this verse and its broader context:

Divine Empowerment:Ezekiel emphasises that the hand of the Lord was upon him. This phrase symbolises God’s empowering presence and guidance throughout the prophetic ministry of Ezekiel. It demonstrates that Ezekiel’s words and actions were directed and empowered by God Himself.

Divine Commission:God instructs Ezekiel to arise and go forth into the plain. The plain could refer to an open area or a public space where Ezekiel would receive a message from God. This emphasises that Ezekiel was not merely a passive recipient of divine revelations but an active participant in God’s plan.

Intimate Communication:God informs Ezekiel that He will talk with him in the plain. This highlights the personal relationship between God and the prophet. It implies that God desires to communicate His will and intentions directly to Ezekiel, demonstrating His trust in him as a faithful messenger.

The Watchman Role:This verse connects with the broader theme of Ezekiel’s calling as a watchman over the house of Israel. In the following verses, God charges Ezekiel with the responsibility of warning the people of their sinful ways and impending judgement. The command to go forth into the plain may be seen as a preparation for the messages Ezekiel will receive and deliver to the people.

Overall, Ezekiel 3:22 showcases the divine commission and empowering presence of God upon the prophet Ezekiel. It emphasises the importance of intimate communication between God and His chosen messengers, as well as the role of watchmen in proclaiming God’s word to His people.

It’s worth exploring the surrounding verses and the entire book of Ezekiel to gain a deeper understanding of the context, themes, and messages conveyed through this prophetic book.
