Ezekiel 3:19

Yet if thou warn the wicked, and he turn not from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.

Ezekiel 3:19 (KJV)

Ezekiel prophesied during the Babylonian exile, when the Israelites lived in captivity. In this verse, God commissions him as a watchman over the house of Israel. In ancient cities, a watchman guarded the walls and warned of approaching danger. In the same way, Ezekiel was appointed to deliver God’s messages and warn the people of the consequences of their sin.

The verse presents a conditional promise. If Ezekiel warns the wicked and they do not turn from their wickedness or their wicked way, they will die in their iniquity. This means they will die both because of their sin and while still in it, facing the wages and outcome of unrepentant sin. The phrase “turn not from his wickedness” points to a lack of repentance and a failure to abandon sin.

Yet the prophet who faithfully delivers the warning has “delivered thy soul.” He is freed from responsibility for the wicked person’s blood. The emphasis is on the messenger’s faithfulness in delivering the message, not on whether the warning is accepted. The hearer remains accountable for his own response.

Believers today share the responsibility to speak the truth of God’s Word and warn others about the consequences of sin. The role of a watchman applies to all who know God’s truth: we are called to warn faithfully, even when the message is unpopular or challenging. Our duty is to deliver the warning clearly and truthfully, leaving the response to the hearer.

This verse also brings comfort. When we faithfully share the warning, we have delivered our own soul. We are not accountable for the choices of those who reject the message. The call is to be faithful, not to guarantee results.

Consider the weight of this commission. God sees the wicked and desires that they be warned. He entrusts that warning to human messengers. As we encounter others who persist in sin, we can speak the truth in love, knowing that our part is to warn, and their part is to turn. The outcome rests with them and with God.
