Ezekiel 3:17

Listen to this article

“Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel: therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me.”

Context:Ezekiel was a prophet who was taken into captivity in Babylon along with many other Israelites. In this verse, God is speaking to Ezekiel, calling him the “son of man” and appointing him as a watchman to the house of Israel. The watchman’s role was to stand on the city walls, keeping a lookout for any approaching danger and warning the people.

Son of man:The phrase “son of man” is used throughout the book of Ezekiel to refer to the prophet himself. It emphasizes Ezekiel’s human nature and his identification with the people of Israel.

Watchman:In ancient times, a watchman was responsible for guarding a city or a community. The watchman would keep watch during the night, looking out for any signs of danger or approaching enemies. Similarly, God appoints Ezekiel as a spiritual watchman to warn the people of Israel of impending judgment or calamity.

Watchman’s duty:As a watchman, Ezekiel had a crucial responsibility. God commands him to “hear the word at my mouth” and deliver warnings to the people on His behalf. This implies that Ezekiel must listen attentively to God’s messages and faithfully communicate them to the Israelites.

Application:While this verse was specifically addressed to Ezekiel, there are lessons we can learn from it today. It reminds us of the importance of being attentive to God’s word and sharing it with others. As believers, we are called to be spiritual watchmen, being vigilant in discerning the times and warning others of spiritual dangers and the consequences of sin.

  • God’s faithfulness:Through this verse, we see God’s faithfulness in appointing Ezekiel as a watchman. God equips those whom He calls, and He empowers them to fulfill their roles. In the same way, when God calls us to a specific task or ministry, He will provide us with the necessary guidance, strength, and abilities to carry it out.
  • Responsibility and accountability:The role of a watchman carries great responsibility and accountability. Ezekiel was accountable to God for faithfully delivering the messages he received. Similarly, as Christians, we have a responsibility to share the truth of God’s Word with others, and we will be accountable to God for how we fulfill that responsibility.

In summary, Ezekiel 3:17 highlights God’s appointment of Ezekiel as a watchman to the house of Israel. It emphasizes the importance of listening to God’s word, faithfully delivering His messages, and warning others of spiritual dangers. As believers, we can learn from Ezekiel’s example and embrace our responsibility to be watchmen in our own lives, sharing the truth of God’s Word with those around us.
