Listen to this article

“And above the firmament that was over their heads was the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone: and upon the likeness of the throne was the likeness as the appearance of a man above upon it.”

Context:This verse is part of a vision that the prophet Ezekiel received from God. The vision begins in Ezekiel 1:4 and continues throughout the chapter, providing a detailed description of heavenly beings and their surroundings.

In verse 26, Ezekiel describes what he sees above the firmament or expanse that was over the heads of the heavenly beings. He sees the likeness of a throne, which appears like a sapphire stone. The sapphire stone is often associated with the colour blue, suggesting a majestic and glorious appearance. This description emphasises the divine and heavenly nature of the throne.

Furthermore, Ezekiel sees a figure upon the throne who has the likeness and appearance of a man. This is significant because it signifies the presence of God. The man-like figure represents the glory and authority of God enthroned in heaven.

It’s important to note that the description in this verse is symbolic and meant to convey a heavenly reality beyond human comprehension. The imagery used by Ezekiel is vivid and poetic, capturing the awe and grandeur of the heavenly realm.

The vision of Ezekiel is a reminder of God’s sovereignty and transcendence. It emphasises that God is the ruler and authority over all creation, including the heavenly beings. The imagery of the throne and the man-like figure also points to God’s divine nature and His ability to reveal Himself in various forms.

Overall, Ezekiel 1:26 serves as a powerful depiction of God’s glory and majesty. It invites us to contemplate the greatness of God and recognise His supreme authority over all things.
