Ezekiel 10:10
“And as for their appearances, they four had one likeness, as if a wheel had been in the midst of a wheel.”
Context:The book of Ezekiel is a prophetic book in the Old Testament. Ezekiel was a prophet who was called by God to deliver messages to the Israelites during their exile in Babylon. In this particular chapter, Ezekiel has a vision of the glory of God departing from the temple in Jerusalem due to the sins of the people.
Symbolism of the wheels:In Ezekiel’s vision, he sees four living creatures, each having four faces and four wings. These creatures are associated with the presence of God. Verse 9 describes their appearance as having wheels beside them. Verse 10 further explains that the appearance of the four living creatures was like a wheel within a wheel.
Meaning of the wheels within a wheel:The wheels within a wheel in Ezekiel’s vision are often interpreted as a representation of God’s sovereignty and His divine control over all things. The wheels indicate that God’s movements and actions are not bound by human limitations. They signify His ability to move in any direction and His complete authority over all circumstances.
Unity and harmony:The fact that the four living creatures had one likeness, as if a wheel had been in the midst of a wheel, suggests a sense of unity and coordination in God’s divine governance. This imagery signifies that God’s actions are always perfectly orchestrated and in harmony with His purposes.
Divine mystery:The vision of the wheels within a wheel is a complex and mysterious image, and its exact meaning may not be fully understood. However, it serves as a reminder of the transcendence and unfathomable nature of God. It emphasizes that God’s ways are higher than human understanding and that His plans and purposes are beyond our comprehension.
Application:As believers, we can find comfort and assurance in the sovereignty of God. Just as the wheels within a wheel symbolize God’s control and coordination, we can trust that He is working all things together for our good (Romans 8:28). Even when we don’t understand His ways, we can have confidence that His plans are perfect and His purposes will ultimately prevail.
- In conclusion, Ezekiel 10:10 presents a vivid image of the wheels within a wheel in Ezekiel’s vision. This imagery highlights God’s sovereignty, His unity in action, and the divine mystery surrounding His ways. It encourages us to trust in God’s perfect control over all things and find comfort in His unfailing guidance.
