Ezekiel 1:16
“The appearance of the wheels and their work was like unto the colour of a beryl: and they four had one likeness: and their appearance and their work was as it were a wheel in the middle of a wheel.”
Context:The book of Ezekiel is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, written by the prophet Ezekiel during the Babylonian exile. In this particular chapter, Ezekiel receives a vision from God, describing the appearance of a divine chariot, often referred to as the “chariot of God’s glory.” It is a complex and vivid vision filled with symbolic imagery.
Wheels within wheels:In this verse, Ezekiel describes the appearance of the wheels within the divine chariot. The wheels are depicted as having the color of a beryl, which is a gemstone with a bluish-green hue. The phrase “wheels within wheels” signifies a complex and intricate structure, indicating the divine origin and divine order of God’s chariot.
Symbolic meaning:The vision of the wheels within wheels carries symbolic significance. The wheels represent God’s divine providence and His sovereign control over all things. They symbolize the divine guidance and movement of God’s purposes throughout history.
Unity and harmony:Notice that the four wheels had “one likeness” and their appearance and work were like a “wheel in the middle of a wheel.” This imagery suggests perfect coordination and unity within God’s divine plan. It portrays the harmonious working of God’s divine will, where everything is intricately connected and ordered according to His purposes.
Divine mobility:The wheels within wheels also indicate the mobility of God’s presence and the movement of His divine purposes. They suggest that God is not confined or limited to a specific location but can move swiftly and decisively to accomplish His will.
Application:Although the vision of Ezekiel’s chariot is a unique and extraordinary occurrence, it can teach us important spiritual lessons. It reminds us of God’s sovereignty and His control over all aspects of our lives. It assures us that even when things seem chaotic or uncertain, God is still in control, orchestrating events according to His perfect plan.
- Trust in God’s providence:Just as the wheels within wheels symbolize God’s divine providence, we can take comfort and trust in His guidance and direction. We can rely on His wisdom and understanding, knowing that He is working all things together for our good (Romans 8:28).
- Seek God’s will:The vision of the wheels within wheels challenges us to seek God’s will and align our lives with His divine purpose. We should strive to live in harmony with His plans, allowing Him to direct our steps and guide us in every decision.
Remember that interpreting symbolic passages like this one requires careful study and consideration of the broader context of the book of Ezekiel and the Bible as a whole. It’s always helpful to consult commentaries and seek guidance from trusted spiritual leaders to gain a deeper understanding of the passage.
