Listen to this article

“And when they went, I heard the noise of their wings, like the noise of great waters, as the voice of the Almighty, the voice of speech, as the noise of an host: when they stood, they let down their wings.”

Context:Ezekiel 1:17 is part of a larger passage known as the vision of the wheels within the wheel. In this vision, the prophet Ezekiel receives a profound and vivid revelation from God. It describes the appearance and movement of heavenly beings known as cherubim and the glory of God.

Cherubim and Their Wings:In this verse, Ezekiel hears the noise of the wings of the cherubim as they move. Cherubim are celestial beings associated with the presence of God and often depicted as having wings. They are described as having multiple wings, and the sound of their wings in motion is compared to the noise of great waters, symbolizing their power and grandeur.

The Voice of the Almighty:Ezekiel also describes hearing the voice of the Almighty, which is described as the voice of speech. This emphasizes the divine communication taking place in this vision. The voice of God is often associated with authority, power, and divine revelation. The mention of the voice of speech underscores the clarity and intelligibility of the divine message being conveyed.

The Noise of an Host:Additionally, Ezekiel notes that the sound of the cherubim’s wings resembles the noise of an army or a multitude. This imagery conveys the sense of an organized and powerful force at work. It emphasizes the idea that the heavenly realm is not passive or idle but actively engaged in carrying out God’s purposes.

Letting Down Their Wings:Lastly, Ezekiel observes that when the cherubim stood still, they let down their wings. This act signifies a posture of reverence, submission, and readiness to serve. It could also symbolize a moment of rest or completion of a specific task. The cherubim’s wings, which were previously in motion, are now at rest, representing a pause or change in their activity.

Overall, Ezekiel 1:17 portrays a magnificent and awe-inspiring vision of the cherubim, their powerful wings, and the divine communication taking place. It highlights the greatness of God, the clarity of His voice, and the purposeful nature of heavenly beings in carrying out His will.
