Ezekiel 10:18

Posted on 18 May at 14:59

“Then the glory of the LORD departed from off the threshold of the house, and stood over the cherubims.”

Context and Background: Ezekiel was a prophet who lived during the time of the Babylonian exile. He received visions and messages from God, which he conveyed to the exiled Israelites in Babylon. In this particular passage, Ezekiel is describing a vision of the departure of God’s glory from the temple in Jerusalem.

Symbolism of the Glory of the Lord: The “glory of the LORD” represents the visible manifestation of God’s presence. In the Old Testament, the glory of the Lord often appeared as a cloud or fire. It signified God’s dwelling among His people and His divine favour. The departure of the glory from the temple indicated God’s judgment and withdrawal of His presence due to the people’s disobedience and idolatry.

The Threshold and the Cherubim: The “threshold of the house” refers to the entrance or doorway of the temple. The cherubim were angelic beings associated with the presence of God. In the vision, the glory of the Lord moves from its previous location on the threshold and stands over the cherubim. This visual imagery emphasises the transfer of God’s presence and favour from the temple to another location.

Spiritual Implications: Ezekiel’s vision of the glory departing from the temple is a significant symbol of God’s judgment and the consequences of the people’s unfaithfulness. It illustrates that God’s presence is not bound to a physical location but can be withdrawn when His people persist in sin and rebellion. The departure of the glory of the Lord demonstrates the severity of God’s judgment and the need for repentance.

Application:

  • Fulfillment in Christ:

While Ezekiel’s vision depicts God’s departure from the physical temple in Jerusalem, as Christians, we understand that God’s presence is now accessible to us through Jesus Christ. In the New Testament, Jesus is referred to as the “temple” (John 2:19-21) and the dwelling place of God (Colossians 2:9). Through faith in Christ, we can experience the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, who assures us of God’s nearness and favour.

In conclusion, Ezekiel 10:18 conveys a powerful message of God’s judgment and the consequences of disobedience. It reminds us of the importance of living in a way that honours God and seeking His forgiveness when we fail. Furthermore, as believers in Christ, we can rejoice in the reality of God’s abiding presence through the Holy Spirit.
