In Jeremiah 35, the prophet receives a message from the Lord to gather the Rechabites, a group of nomadic people known for their commitment to a set of ancestral traditions. Jeremiah brings them into the temple and sets before them bowls of wine, inviting them to drink. However, the Rechabites refuse, adhering to the commandments of their forefather, Jonadab, who instructed them to abstain from wine, settle in tents, and refrain from agricultural pursuits.
God uses the faithfulness of the Rechabites to contrast it with the disobedience of the Israelites. He praises the Rechabites for their unwavering obedience to their ancestor’s instructions, even as the Israelites repeatedly rebelled against God’s commandments. Consequently, God promises the Rechabites that they will always have descendants to serve Him.
The chapter ends with Jeremiah delivering God’s message to the people of Judah, using the faithfulness of the Rechabites as an example to rebuke the Israelites for their disobedience. However, the Israelites ignore Jeremiah’s warning and continue in their rebellious ways.
