Jeremiah 35:11
But it came to passe when Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came vp into the land, that we said, Come, and let vs goe to Ierusalem for feare of the armie of the Caldeans, and for feare of the armie of the Syrians: so we dwell at Ierusalem. Jeremiah 35:11 (KJV)
Context: The book of Jeremiah contains the prophecies and messages of the prophet Jeremiah to the people of Judah during a time of great turmoil and impending judgment. In this particular chapter the Lord commands Jeremiah to bring the Rechabites before him as a test of obedience.
Historical background: The verse mentions Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, who came up into the land. This refers to the period of Judah’s exile when Babylon invaded Jerusalem, laid siege to the city, and took many Israelites captive. The Rechabites, fearing the Babylonian and Syrian armies, sought refuge in Jerusalem.
The Rechabites’ faithfulness: The Rechabites were known for their obedience to the commands of their ancestor Jonadab, who instructed them to abstain from wine, live in tents, and not build houses or plant vineyards (Jeremiah 35:6‑10). Even when brought to Jeremiah’s presence in Jerusalem, they continued to abide by these commands.
Lessons on faithfulness: Their commitment to the instructions of their forefather serves as an example of faithfulness and obedience. Their unwavering adherence to their ancestor’s commands contrasted with the disobedience and unfaithfulness of the people of Judah towards God’s commandments.
The importance of obedience: God used the Rechabites as an object lesson for the people of Judah, highlighting their faithfulness as a rebuke to the unfaithfulness of His chosen people. Through this illustration Jeremiah emphasized the significance of obedience to God’s commands.
Application to our lives: The story of the Rechabites challenges us to consider our own obedience to God’s Word. It prompts us to examine our commitment to following God’s instructions, even in challenging or unfamiliar circumstances. Just as the Rechabites remained faithful to their ancestor’s commands, we are called to be faithful to God’s commandments, demonstrating our love and devotion to Him.
