Jeremiah 35:2

Posted on 18 May at 14:12
Listen to this article

“Go unto the house of the Rechabites, and speak unto them, and bring them into the house of the LORD, into one of the chambers, and give them wine to drink.”

Context and Background:The book of Jeremiah is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, attributed to the prophet Jeremiah. The passage in question is part of a larger narrative where God commands Jeremiah to convey a message to the Rechabites, a group of people who were descendants of Jonadab, the son of Rechab. The Rechabites were known for their strict adherence to their father’s command to abstain from wine, settle in tents, and avoid farming or owning vineyards.

The Commission of Jeremiah:God instructs Jeremiah to go to the house of the Rechabites, speak to them, and bring them to one of the chambers in the house of the Lord. This was likely a public setting where the people would gather. God wanted Jeremiah to deliver a message to them and demonstrate it through a symbolic act involving wine.

The Symbolic Act:The command to give the Rechabites wine to drink was not meant to encourage them to violate their father’s command. Rather, it served as a test to highlight their faithfulness and obedience. The Rechabites were known for their strict adherence to the commands of their ancestor, Jonadab, and by offering them wine, Jeremiah could demonstrate the contrast between their faithfulness and the disobedience of the people of Judah.

Lessons from the Rechabites:The Rechabites’ unwavering obedience to their forefather’s commands is contrasted with the disobedience and unfaithfulness of the people of Judah towards God’s commands. The Rechabites’ example highlights the importance of honoring and obeying God’s instructions and the value of fidelity to one’s family heritage.

Application for Believers:

Obedience:Just as the Rechabites remained obedient to their ancestor’s commands, believers are called to obey God’s Word. Obedience to God’s instructions brings blessings and demonstrates our love for Him.

Faithfulness:The Rechabites’ faithfulness serves as an example for believers to remain faithful to God’s commands, even in the face of temptation or pressure to compromise.

Commitment:The Rechabites’ commitment to their family heritage encourages believers to honor and respect their own family heritage while staying devoted to God’s purposes.

Contrast:The passage also highlights the contrast between those who are faithful to God and those who are disobedient. It reminds us to evaluate our own lives and ensure that we are walking in obedience to God’s Word. Overall, Jeremiah 35:2 and the story of the Rechabites emphasize the importance of obedience, faithfulness, and commitment to God’s commands. It serves as a reminder to stay true to our convictions, even when faced with challenges, and to live lives that honor and please God.
