Ezekiel 13:14

Posted on 18 May at 14:59

“So will I break down the wall that ye have daubed with untempered mortar, and bring it down to the ground, so that the foundation thereof shall be discovered, and it shall fall, and ye shall be consumed in the midst thereof: and ye shall know that I am the LORD.”

Ezekiel 13:14 (KJV) says: “So will I break down the wall that ye have daubed with untempered mortar, and bring it down to the ground, so that the foundation thereof shall be discovered, and it shall fall, and ye shall be consumed in the midst thereof: and ye shall know that I am the LORD.”

Historical and Contextual Background:Ezekiel was a prophet who lived during the Babylonian exile. He prophesied to the Israelites who were carried away captive to Babylon after the Babylonian invasion of Judah in the 6th century BC. In this particular passage, Ezekiel is speaking against the false prophets of his time who were deceiving the people with their lies and false visions.

Symbolism and Metaphorical Language:In this verse, the Lord uses the imagery of a wall built with untempered mortar to convey His message. The wall represents the false sense of security and protection that the false prophets were promising to the people. The untempered mortar symbolises the flimsy and inadequate foundation upon which they had built their deceptive teachings.

God’s Judgment and Exposing Deception:The verse declares that God will break down the wall built with untempered mortar. This signifies that the false prophets’ lies and deceit will be exposed and their false teachings will crumble. The “foundation thereof shall be discovered” implies that the true nature of their teachings will be revealed, and they will be shown to be false. As a result, the wall will fall, and those who relied on it will be consumed or destroyed.

The Purpose of God’s Judgment:The purpose of this judgment is twofold. Firstly, it aims to demonstrate God’s sovereignty and make it clear to all that He alone is the true Lord. The false prophets were claiming to speak on behalf of God, but through this judgment, the people will come to know that they were deceived. Secondly, it serves as a means to bring the people back to a true and genuine relationship with God. By exposing falsehood, God desires to restore His people to a place of true worship and obedience.

Application to Our Lives:Though this passage directly addresses the false prophets of Ezekiel’s time, we can draw some applications for our own lives. It serves as a warning against following false teachings and prophets who claim to speak for God but distort the truth. It reminds us to be discerning and to test everything against the Word of God. We should seek a solid foundation in our faith, built upon the truth of God’s Word. Ultimately, we are called to have a genuine and authentic relationship with God, knowing that He alone is the true Lord.

In summary, Ezekiel 13:14 is a passage that exposes the false prophets of Ezekiel’s time and reveals God’s judgment against their deceitful teachings. It serves as a reminder for us to be discerning and build our faith on the solid foundation of God’s truth.
