Ezekiel 14:7

Listen to this article

“For every one of the house of Israel, or of the stranger that sojourneth in Israel, which separateth himself from me, and setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to a prophet to enquire of him concerning me; I the LORD will answer him by myself”

Context:The book of Ezekiel is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, and it contains visions, prophecies, and messages from God to the people of Israel. The prophet Ezekiel was called by God to deliver messages of judgment, warning, and hope to the exiled Israelites in Babylon.

Idolatry and Separation from God:In this verse, God addresses the people of Israel and the strangers (foreigners) residing among them. God points out that those who separate themselves from Him and set up idols in their hearts are engaging in idolatry. Idolatry refers to the worship of false gods or placing anything above the true worship of God.

The Stumbling Block of Iniquity:The verse mentions that these individuals put the stumbling block of their iniquity before their face. This refers to their deliberate sinfulness and their refusal to turn away from their idols and sinful practices. It signifies their unrepentant hearts and their rejection of God’s commandments.

Seeking Guidance from Prophets:Despite their idolatrous practices, some of the people still come to inquire of the prophet concerning God. They approach the prophet seeking guidance, insight, or answers regarding God’s will or future events. However, they continue to hold on to their idols and sinful ways, displaying a lack of true repentance and a divided heart.

God’s Response:God declares that He will answer such individuals personally. By stating “I the LORD will answer him by myself,” God emphasizes His direct involvement and the fact that He is aware of their heart condition. This response serves as a reminder that God sees through their outward actions and discerns the true intentions of their hearts.

  • The Danger of Idolatry:Ezekiel 14:7 highlights the seriousness of idolatry and the dangers it poses to one’s relationship with God. It reveals that even if someone seeks guidance from a prophet or desires to know God’s will, it is futile if they continue to embrace idolatry and refuse to turn away from their sinful practices.
  • God’s Omniscience:The verse underscores God’s knowledge and understanding of the hearts of His people. God sees beyond external actions and examines the inner motives and intentions of individuals. This serves as a reminder that we cannot hide anything from God, and true repentance requires genuine heart transformation.
  • Authentic Repentance:The passage challenges us to examine our own lives and hearts. It encourages us to wholeheartedly turn away from anything that hinders our relationship with God. Authentic repentance involves not only seeking God’s guidance but also surrendering our idols and sinful ways, allowing Him to transform us completely.

Overall, Ezekiel 14:7 serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of wholehearted devotion to God and the need to turn away from idols and sinful practices. It encourages us to seek God’s guidance with a sincere and repentant heart, knowing that He desires to answer us and draw us closer to Himself.
