Ezekiel 14:9

Listen to this article

“And if the prophet be deceived when he hath spoken a thing, I the Lord have deceived that prophet, and I will stretch out my hand upon him, and will destroy him from the midst of my people Israel.”

Context:The Book of Ezekiel was written during the Babylonian exile when the people of Israel were living in captivity. The prophet Ezekiel was called by God to deliver messages of warning, judgment, and hope to the exiled Israelites. The passage of Ezekiel 14 focuses on the people’s idolatry and their reliance on false prophets rather than seeking the true word of God.

Deception and Divine Judgment:In Ezekiel 14:9, God addresses the issue of deception within the prophetic realm. It highlights the gravity of a prophet delivering a false message, claiming it is from God. God states that if a prophet is deceived and speaks falsely, He Himself is the one who allowed that deception to occur. This can be seen as a form of divine judgment on both the prophet and those who follow their false teachings.

Accountability and Consequences:God emphasises His sovereignty and authority in this verse. He declares that He will stretch out His hand upon the deceived prophet and will bring destruction upon him. This serves as a reminder that accountability and consequences exist for those who mislead others and propagate falsehoods in the name of God.

Spiritual Discernment:Ezekiel 14:9 underscores the importance of discernment in recognising true prophets from false ones. It urges the people of Israel to be cautious and test the words of those who claim to speak on behalf of God, ensuring that they align with His revealed truth. This applies not only to the time of Ezekiel but also to believers throughout history, emphasising the need for discernment and a close relationship with God.

It’s important to interpret this passage in light of the broader biblical context and the purpose of the Book of Ezekiel. While this verse can seem challenging or troubling at first glance, it reflects God’s just response to those who distort His message and deceive His people. The overarching theme is the call to turn away from idolatry, embrace the truth, and seek a genuine relationship with God.
