Ezekiel 18:9

Listen to this article

“Hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord God.”

Context:The book of Ezekiel was written by the prophet Ezekiel during the Babylonian exile. God spoke to Ezekiel and gave him various messages to deliver to the exiled Israelites. In this particular chapter, God addresses the proverb that was prevalent among the people, which said that the fathers ate sour grapes, and the children’s teeth were set on edge (Ezekiel 18:2). God clarifies through Ezekiel that every individual is responsible for their own actions and will be held accountable accordingly.

Walking in God’s Statutes:The verse mentions that the person has walked in God’s statutes. This indicates a life of obedience to God’s commandments and a desire to follow His ways. Throughout the Bible, God gives His people instructions and laws to follow, and those who choose to walk in His statutes are acknowledging His authority and seeking to honor Him in their lives.

Keeping God’s Judgments:Along with walking in God’s statutes, the person mentioned in the verse has kept God’s judgments. This implies that they have adhered to the principles of justice and righteousness that God has established. They have embraced a lifestyle that aligns with God’s moral standards and have made choices that are fair and equitable. It reflects their commitment to living in accordance with God’s values.

Dealing Truly and Being Just:The verse further emphasizes that the person has dealt truly and is just. This refers to their integrity in their interactions with others. They are honest, trustworthy, and fair in their dealings. Their actions demonstrate a commitment to righteousness and upholding justice. This highlights the importance of not only following God’s commandments but also applying them in everyday life and relationships.

The Promise of Life:The verse concludes with the promise that the person who walks in God’s statutes, keeps His judgments, deals truly, and is just will surely live. This promise is from the Lord God Himself. It signifies that those who live in obedience to God and uphold His principles will experience a life of blessing, favour, and spiritual vitality.

Overall, Ezekiel 18:9 encourages individuals to take personal responsibility for their own actions and to live a life of righteousness before God. It emphasises the importance of obedience to God’s commandments, justice, and integrity in dealing with others. The promise of life from the Lord serves as a motivation and assurance that God rewards those who seek to honour Him in their thoughts, words, and deeds.
