Ezekiel 18:9

Hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord God.

Ezekiel 18:9 (KJV)

The book of Ezekiel was written by the prophet Ezekiel during the Babylonian exile. God spoke to Ezekiel and gave him various messages to deliver to the exiled Israelites. In this particular chapter, God addresses the proverb that was prevalent among the people, which said that the fathers ate sour grapes, and the children’s teeth were set on edge (Ezekiel 18:2). God clarifies through Ezekiel that every individual is responsible for their own actions and will be held accountable accordingly.

The verse describes a righteous person who has walked in God’s statutes and kept His judgments. Walking in God’s statutes indicates a life of obedience to God’s commandments and a desire to follow His ways. Keeping God’s judgments refers to observing His ordinances and laws, particularly in moral and civil matters among men. The phrase “to deal truly” emphasizes acting faithfully and with integrity in one’s dealings. Such a person is described as “just” or righteous.

The promise is clear: “he shall surely live.” This is not merely physical life but signifies a life blessed and sustained by God, affirmed by the declaration of the Lord God. The verse underscores the principle of personal responsibility and the importance of righteous living. It teaches that genuine righteousness involves both worship of God (statutes) and ethical treatment of others (judgments).

The surrounding context (Ezekiel 18:5-9) lists specific righteous behaviors, including not eating upon the mountains (avoiding idolatrous worship), not lifting up eyes to idols, and dealing justly with others. These concrete actions show that the righteousness described in Ezekiel 18:9 is not abstract but expressed in daily choices. This passage highlights God’s justice: He does not punish the righteous for the sins of others, nor does He let the wicked go unpunished.

Ezekiel 18:9 encourages individuals to take personal responsibility for their own actions and to live a life of righteousness before God. It emphasizes the importance of obedience to God’s commandments, justice, and integrity in dealing with others. The promise of life from the Lord serves as a motivation and assurance that God rewards those who seek to honor Him in their thoughts, words, and deeds.

The verse serves as a call to personal holiness and a warning against relying on the righteousness of others. It affirms that God’s ways are just and that He rewards those who diligently follow Him. Each person stands before God individually, and the life He gives is the portion of those who walk in His ways.
