Ezekiel 24:18

So I spake unto the people in the morning: and at even my wife died; and I did in the morning as I was commanded.

Ezekiel 24:18 (KJV)

The book of Ezekiel records messages from God to the exiled Israelites in Babylon, addressing their sins, the coming judgment, and the hope of restoration. In Ezekiel 24, God commanded Ezekiel to perform symbolic actions that portrayed the impending destruction of Jerusalem, including preparing a cooking pot with choice pieces of meat and water. The chapter also contains a deeply personal sign: God tells Ezekiel that He will take away “the desire of thine eyes” with a blow, and that Ezekiel must not mourn openly, weep, or perform customary mourning rites.

In this verse, Ezekiel obeys God’s command to speak to the people in the morning, and by evening his wife dies. The next morning he continues to do as he was commanded. The death of Ezekiel’s wife is not attributed to any specific cause; it is a divine sign. His restrained grief was itself part of the message. The timing is significant—the death occurs immediately after his public ministry, making his personal loss a public testimony.

The people’s question in Ezekiel 24:19, “Wilt thou not tell us what these things are to us?” shows they understood his actions were a message. The explanation follows in Ezekiel 24:20-24: as Ezekiel did not mourn for his wife, so the people would not mourn for the destruction of the temple, which was “the desire of your eyes.” His wife’s death symbolized the coming calamity, and his silence foreshadowed the overwhelming sorrow that would leave the people speechless.

This passage teaches the importance of obedience to God’s commands, even in difficult circumstances. It also shows that God may call His servants to endure personal suffering for the sake of His greater purposes. Finally, it encourages trust in God’s sovereignty, even when His ways are not fully understood. Ezekiel’s life was a living parable, and his faithful obedience in profound personal loss was central to his prophetic calling.
