Ezekiel 24:20

Then I answered them, The word of the Lord came vnto me, saying; Ezekiel 24:20 (KJV)

The book of Ezekiel is set during the Babylonian exile, when the people of Israel were taken captive by the Babylonians. Ezekiel himself was among the exiles, receiving visions and messages from God throughout this period of national crisis.

In chapter 24 God directs Ezekiel to perform a series of symbolic actions that illustrate the impending destruction of Jerusalem. The boiling pot mentioned earlier in the chapter (verse 10) represents the city, while the death of Ezekiel’s wife, which occurs shortly before verse 20, foreshadows the mourning that will accompany Jerusalem’s fall.

These symbols convey a message of loss and grief. Verse 21 records God’s declaration that He will lay waste to Jerusalem and its inhabitants will be taken captive, a pronouncement that would cause deep sorrow among the people. The people’s own complaints about continuing their rituals are recorded in verse 20, highlighting their confusion and distress in the face of Ezekiel’s somber appearance.

God’s judgment is portrayed as real and consequential. The symbolic actions serve to underscore the seriousness of divine judgment on the city and its people, urging them to examine their lives, repent of their sins, and turn to God for forgiveness and reconciliation.

Despite his personal tragedy, Ezekiel obeyed God’s command without hesitation. His faithful delivery of the message, even in the midst of personal loss, demonstrates a steadfast commitment to God’s will and provides a model for believers to follow God’s commands, however difficult they may be.

Finally, while Ezekiel’s experience is marked by grief, the broader narrative of Ezekiel points toward a future hope of restoration and redemption after the exile. In times of loss, believers can find comfort in God’s promises and trust in His enduring faithfulness, confident that restoration follows judgment for those who remain faithful.
