Ezekiel 25:12

Thus saith the Lord God; Because that Edom hath dealt against the house of Judah by taking vengeance, and hath greatly offended, and revenged himself upon them;

Ezekiel 25:12 (KJV)

Ezekiel 25:12 belongs to a series of prophecies against nations surrounding Israel. Here the prophet turns to Edom, a people descended from Esau, Jacob’s brother. The Edomites shared a long history of hostility with Judah, and this verse records the Lord’s specific charge against them.

The opening phrase, “Thus saith the Lord GOD,” marks the message as divine, not the prophet’s opinion. The accusation is precise: Edom “dealt against the house of Judah by taking vengeance.” The Hebrew wording stresses malice and spite, showing that Edom’s actions were not mere politics but personal revenge. The phrase “hath greatly offended” indicates that Edom incurred grievous guilt before God, and “revenged himself upon them” reveals a vindictive motive. God declares that He will bring disaster upon Edom, making it desolate forever.

The judgment on Edom echoes the principle that vengeance belongs to the Lord (Romans 12:19). God sees the motives of nations and holds them accountable for how they treat His people. This verse also connects to the broader biblical theme of divine justice, where God responds to the oppression of His covenant people.

This verse reminds readers that God is just and will punish those who act unjustly. It warns against harboring a vengeful spirit, for such an attitude offends God. It also assures believers that God is not indifferent to their suffering; He hears their cries and will right every wrong in His time.

Ezekiel 25:12 calls us to examine our own hearts. Do we seek revenge when wronged, or do we trust God to bring justice? The verse encourages us to leave judgment in God’s hands and to treat others with the justice and mercy He requires.
