Ezekiel 28:5

Listen to this article

“By thy great wisdom and by thy traffick hast thou increased thy riches, and thine heart is lifted up because of thy riches.”

Context:The book of Ezekiel contains prophecies given by the prophet Ezekiel during the Babylonian exile. In this particular chapter, Ezekiel is speaking a lamentation against the king of Tyre, but it also contains symbolic references to the spiritual power behind the earthly king.

The King of Tyre:In this verse, Ezekiel addresses the ruler of Tyre, a prominent Phoenician city known for its wealth and trade. The king of Tyre had become proud and arrogant due to his riches and wisdom. However, it is important to note that beyond the earthly king, there is a spiritual message being conveyed.

Symbolic Representation:The passage also carries a deeper meaning beyond the earthly ruler. The language used in this chapter goes beyond human abilities and points to a spiritual power, often associated with Satan or the adversary.

Wisdom and Riches:The verse acknowledges the great wisdom and success in trade that the ruler of Tyre had attained. It recognizes the increase in wealth due to his shrewdness and business ventures. However, the focus shifts to the consequences of this prosperity.

Pride and Arrogance:The heart of the king of Tyre became lifted up with pride because of his riches. This pride and arrogance led him to believe that he was invincible and equal to God. It is a warning against the dangers of wealth and the tendency for it to corrupt the heart.

Spiritual Application:The passage can be applied to our lives in several ways. It reminds us of the importance of recognizing that all wisdom and material blessings come from God. We should be careful not to allow our hearts to become lifted up with pride and arrogance because of our achievements or possessions.

  • Guarding against Materialism:This verse serves as a cautionary reminder about the perils of materialism. It is a call to focus on the eternal rather than the temporary. While wealth and wisdom are not inherently wrong, they can easily become stumbling blocks if they lead to self-reliance and a neglect of God.
  • Seeking True Wisdom:Instead of seeking wisdom solely for personal gain or self-promotion, we should pursue wisdom that aligns with God’s Word and purposes. True wisdom comes from a humble heart that acknowledges God as the ultimate source of all knowledge and understanding.
  • Cultivating Humility:This passage encourages us to cultivate humility in the face of success or wealth. We must recognize that everything we have ultimately comes from God’s grace. Humility guards our hearts against pride and enables us to use our resources for God’s glory and the well-being of others.
