Ezekiel 33:6

But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman’s hand.

Context

Ezekiel was a prophet who ministered to the exiles in Babylon during Israel’s captivity. This verse is part of a larger passage where God appointed Ezekiel as a watchman over Israel, responsible for warning the people of impending danger and the consequences of their actions.

Meaning

In ancient times, a watchman guarded the city and sounded the alarm if an enemy approached, giving the people an opportunity to prepare and defend themselves. Similarly, Ezekiel was appointed as a spiritual watchman, responsible for warning Israel about their sinful ways and the impending judgment of God.

In this verse, the “sword” represents the judgment or punishment of God that would come upon the people if they continued in their rebellious behaviour. The watchman’s role was to recognise the approaching danger and sound the trumpet, symbolising the warning of God’s impending judgment.

If the watchman failed to blow the trumpet and warn the people, and judgment fell, their blood would be on the watchman’s hands. The watchman would be held accountable for failing to warn, and the responsibility for their destruction would be attributed to him.

The passage also clarifies the boundaries of this accountability. If the watchman did blow the trumpet and the people ignored the warning, their blood would be on their own heads (Ezekiel 33:4-5). The individual remains responsible for their own sin, but the watchman is accountable for failing to warn. This distinction highlights God’s justice: He does not hold the watchman responsible for the sinner’s iniquity, but for the neglect of duty.
