Say vnto them, As I liue, saith the Lord God, I haue no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turne from his way & liue: turne ye, turne ye from your euill wayes, for why wil ye die, O house of Israel? Ezekiel 33:11 (KJV)

Say unto them,

As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel? Ezekiel 33:11 (KJV)

The book of Ezekiel is a prophetic book in the Old Testament. Ezekiel was a prophet during the time of the Babylonian exile, and his prophecies were primarily directed to the people of Israel who were in captivity. In this verse, God is speaking to the prophet Ezekiel, instructing him to deliver a message to the people of Israel.

Meaning and Lessons:

God’s Desire for Repentance: The verse begins with a declaration from God Himself, stating that He takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked. God’s desire is not to see people perch and be destroyed; instead, He longs for their repentance and redemption. This verse reveals God’s compassionate and merciful nature.

God’s Call to Repentance: The verse emphasizes the importance of repentance and turning away from evil ways. The phrase “turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways” highlights God’s plea for the people of Israel to change their course, abandon their sinful practices, and return to Him. It signifies God’s willingness to forgive and restore those who genuinely repent.

God’s Warning and Invitation: The latter part of the verse contains a warning and an invitation. God warns the house of Israel about the consequences of continuing in their wickedness. He questions why they would choose death when the option to live by turning away from their evil ways is available. This shows that God’s desire for life and salvation is extended to all, but it requires a response on their part.

Application to Believers: While this verse was originally addressed to the house of Israel, its message holds relevance for believers today. It reminds us of God’s compassionate nature, His desire for repentance, and His invitation to turn away from sin. It encourages us to examine our lives, identify areas of disobedience, and make a conscious decision to align ourselves with God’s will.

God’s Character Revealed: Ezekiel 33:11 offers a glimpse into the character of God. It highlights His mercy, patience, and desire for reconciliation. It reminds us that God’s ultimate desire is to see people restored and brought into a right relationship with Him. It also reveals that God’s judgment is a result of His justice and righteousness, rather than a desire for destruction.
