Ezekiel 33:12

Posted on 18 May at 14:58
Listen to this article

“Therefore, thou son of man, say unto the children of thy people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him in the day of his transgression: as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall thereby in the day that he turneth from his wickedness; neither shall the righteous be able to live for his righteousness in the day that he sinneth.”

Context:To understand this verse better, it’s important to consider its context. In the book of Ezekiel, the prophet is called by God to be a watchman for the house of Israel. He is tasked with delivering God’s messages of warning and repentance to the people, especially the exiles in Babylon. Chapter 33 contains a message of restoration and hope for the Israelites.

Son of Man:God addresses Ezekiel as “thou son of man,” emphasizing his role as a human messenger chosen by God. This term is used throughout the book of Ezekiel to refer to the prophet himself.

Righteousness and Transgression:The verse highlights the relationship between righteousness and transgression. It states that the righteousness of a righteous person will not deliver them on the day they commit transgressions. This means that even if someone has a history of righteousness, it does not guarantee their deliverance from the consequences of their sins. Righteousness alone cannot atone for transgressions.

Wickedness and Turning:Conversely, the verse suggests that the wickedness of a wicked person will not cause them to fall if they turn from their wickedness. In other words, if a wicked person repents and turns away from their sinful ways, they will not be held accountable for their previous wickedness.

The Principle of Accountability:This verse underscores the principle of individual accountability before God. It teaches that one’s past righteousness or wickedness does not exempt them from facing the consequences of their actions. God judges each person based on their current state and their response to His call to repentance.

The Call to Repentance:The verse emphasizes the importance of repentance. It implies that the righteous person who sins must acknowledge their transgressions and seek forgiveness through repentance. Likewise, the wicked person has the opportunity to turn from their wickedness and find forgiveness and restoration.

The Role of Righteousness:Although righteousness alone cannot save a person from the consequences of their transgressions, it is still important. Righteousness is a characteristic that should be cultivated and maintained in the life of a believer. It is an expression of a person’s devotion to God and their commitment to living in accordance with His will.

Overall, Ezekiel 33:12 teaches the importance of individual accountability, the need for repentance, and the role of righteousness in the life of a believer. It encourages both the righteous and the wicked to respond to God’s call for repentance and find forgiveness and restoration through Him.
