Ezekiel 34:19

Listen to this article

“And as for my flock, they eat that which ye have trodden with your feet; and they drink that which ye have fouled with your feet.”

Context:Ezekiel 34 contains a prophetic message from God to the leaders of Israel, particularly the shepherds, who were responsible for caring for God’s people. The chapter addresses their failure to fulfill their duties, resulting in the scattered and oppressed state of the Israelites.

The shepherds’ neglect:In this verse, God expresses His displeasure with the shepherds of Israel. He accuses them of trampling and fouling the pasture that should have been nourishing His flock. This metaphorical language portrays the leaders’ negligence in providing spiritual nourishment, guidance, and protection to the people under their care.

God’s concern for His flock:The flock referred to here represents the people of Israel, whom God considers His own. God is deeply concerned about the well-being of His people and holds the shepherds accountable for their mistreatment. He observes their actions and expects them to fulfill their responsibilities faithfully.

The consequences of poor leadership:The failure of the shepherds to properly tend to the flock leads to dire consequences. The people are left to fend for themselves, consuming what little sustenance they can find even if it is contaminated. This illustrates the spiritual hunger and thirst experienced by the people due to the lack of godly leadership.

Lessons for leaders and believers:This verse provides important lessons for both leaders and individuals within the faith community. Leaders are reminded of their duty to care for those under their charge and the consequences of neglecting their responsibilities. It highlights the importance of providing spiritual nourishment, guidance, and protection to the people entrusted to their care.

For believers, this verse encourages discernment when it comes to choosing leaders. It reminds them to seek leaders who faithfully follow God’s Word and prioritize the spiritual well-being of the congregation. It also reminds individuals of their own responsibility to seek nourishment from God’s Word and not rely solely on others for their spiritual growth.

Application:As believers, we can apply the message of Ezekiel 34:19 by being diligent in our own spiritual growth and seeking leaders who faithfully shepherd God’s people. We should also be aware of our own responsibilities within the community of faith, caring for one another and supporting our leaders as they strive to fulfill their calling.
