Ezekiel 36:20

And when they entered unto the heathen, whither they went, they profaned my holy name, when they said to them, These are the people of the Lord, and are gone forth out of his land.

Ezekiel 36:20 (KJV)

Israel had been carried captive into Babylon because of persistent disobedience and idolatry. In Ezekiel 36, the prophet speaks to exiles who have lost their land and their identity. Their presence among the nations was not hidden; the heathen watched and drew conclusions about the God they claimed to serve.

God charges that His people profaned His holy name. The nations said, “These are the people of the LORD, and are gone forth out of his land.” That observation became a reproach. Instead of displaying God’s power and faithfulness, Israel’s exile made Him appear weak or unfaithful. Their disobedience and adoption of foreign ways blurred the distinction that marked them as His own.

The profanation was not merely their suffering but the dishonor their conduct brought upon God’s reputation. The central issue is the holiness of God’s name before the watching world. When God’s people live in a way that contradicts their identity, the nations blaspheme or despise Him. The connection between Israel’s behavior and the nations’ perception is direct: their wicked lives and conversations among the heathen gave the nations grounds to speak reproachfully of the Lord.

The following verses in Ezekiel 36 show God acting for the sake of His own holy name, which Israel had profaned. This connection underscores that God’s restoration arises from His covenant faithfulness, not from Israel’s merit.

The exile was a disciplinary measure meant to bring repentance and eventual restoration. Through hardship, God sought to purify His people and bring them back to their land. This passage reminds believers that their conduct directly affects how God’s name is perceived. Living in obedience safeguards God’s reputation among the nations. As followers of Christ, our lives should reflect His love, righteousness, and holiness, so that others see Him accurately.

Ezekiel 36:20 highlights the consequences of Israel’s disobedience and the resulting profanation of God’s name. It calls us to faithful representation, knowing that our actions can either honor or disgrace the God we claim to serve.
