Ezekiel 36:22

Listen to this article

“Therefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord GOD; I do not this for your sakes, O house of Israel, but for mine holy name’s sake, which ye have profaned among the heathen, whither ye went.”

Context:The book of Ezekiel was written during the Babylonian exile, when the Israelites were in captivity in Babylon. The Israelites had been unfaithful to God, and as a result, they were facing the consequences of their disobedience. God used Ezekiel to speak words of judgment and hope to His people.

God’s Motive:In Ezekiel 36:22, God declares that His actions to restore Israel are not based on the merits or worthiness of the Israelites themselves. Instead, He states that He is acting for the sake of His holy name, which the Israelites had profaned among the nations where they were scattered. Despite their unfaithfulness and disobedience, God desires to bring glory to His name and demonstrate His faithfulness.

Profaning God’s Name:The Israelites had profaned the name of God by their unfaithful conduct among the nations where they were scattered. Their disobedience and idolatry had caused the nations to question the power and faithfulness of the God of Israel. Through their actions, the Israelites had failed to represent God’s holiness and righteousness to the world.

God’s Desire for Restoration:Despite the Israelites’ unfaithfulness and the profaning of His name, God declares His intention to restore them. In the subsequent verses, God promises to cleanse the people of their impurities, give them a new heart and spirit, and bring them back to their land. This restoration serves both as a testimony to God’s faithfulness and a means of sanctifying His name among the nations.

  • Application:Ezekiel 36:22 reminds us of God’s faithfulness, even in the face of human disobedience and unfaithfulness. It highlights the importance of honoring and representing God’s name faithfully before others. As believers, our conduct and actions should align with God’s character, so that we may bring glory to His name and be a witness to the world.

In conclusion, Ezekiel 36:22 emphasizes God’s motivation for restoring the Israelites and the importance of honoring His name. It serves as a reminder to us to live in a way that brings honor to God’s name, reflecting His character and faithfulness.
