Ezekiel 40:38

And the chambers, and the entries thereof were by the postes of the gates, where they washed the burnt offering. Ezekiel 40:38 (KJV)

Ezekiel 40:38 forms part of the extensive architectural description that the prophet receives in a divine vision of a future temple. The vision presents a restored and glorified sanctuary that had not yet been built in Ezekiel’s own time. In the surrounding verses the prophet measures the outer court, the gates, and the various chambers that compose the complex, offering a precise layout for the reader.

Verse 38 specifically mentions the chambers of the ministers of the house. These chambers were situated by the posts or pillars of the gates, on the north side of the outer court, and their doors were kept shut. Their primary function was to serve as places where the priests washed the offerings. The text highlights that the burnt offering was among the sacrifices washed there, though the passage also speaks generally of “the offerings.” The burnt offering, an animal wholly consumed on the altar, represented atonement, dedication, and the worshiper’s surrender to God.

The placement of the washing chambers near the gates underscores the importance of ritual purification before entering the holy presence of God. By washing the offerings at the threshold, the worshipper’s approach was symbolically cleansed, preparing both the sacrifice and the worshiper for communion with the Divine.

While the description is architectural, many readers see a spiritual dimension. The New Testament likens believers’ bodies to the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 6:19), calling Christians to maintain purity and to present themselves as living sacrifices. In this light, Ezekiel’s chambers point to the need for inner cleansing and holiness before drawing near to God.

Thus, Ezekiel 40:38 describes chambers located by the gate posts, on the north side of the outer court, with shut doors, where the priests washed the offerings—including the burnt offering—emphasizing purification, preparation, and the overarching call to holiness in worship.
